Tri-Cities Woman Takes Home Best in Show

An 18-inch “spoke” basket designed and created by Teresa Buchanan of Johnson City took Best in Show honors at the 45th annual Mountain Makins Festival in Morristown. Buchanan, who holds an M.F.A. from East Tennessee State University, has been a full-time artisan since 1985. She works primarily with reeds and braided grass for baskets and wool for scarves and blankets. “It’s all weaving,” she quipped, “just different materials.” More than 50 crafters from five Southeastern states submitted entries in the juried event, held at the Rose Center. Division winners were Ken Manning, April Dotson, Vicki Kinser, Aurora Harrison Bull and Jim Hodge. Honorable mention citations went to Mary Ann Horner, Sita Loop, Timber Rice and Wendy Ritchey.
