Sam Beall Turns 102

Family and friends gathered at the home of Veazey and Andy Hillmer, one
of Sam Beall’s grandchildren, to celebrate his 102nd birthday. Beall was profiled in VIP Knoxville’s December 2018/January 2019 issue. Interviewed for the profile at the West Knoxville home where he has lived for 30 years, Beall recalled his years working on the Manhattan Project
and at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

He had just received the prestigious Clayton Award from Knoxville Museum of Art and the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts. “I’m the oldest living Scoutmaster,” said Beall, who was 99 at the time. Beall was married to his wife Mary Anne for 73 years. There are five children, thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Great-granddaughter photographer Lewis Walton took photographs to mark the occasion.
