Editor's Letter

As editor of VIP Knoxville, possibly the smallest item on my list of responsibilities is selecting the quote that runs at the top of every month’s calendar. Just in case, you thought those were computer-generated or part of a template: nope, every month I spend a few minutes searching online for quotes about the current month and selecting something I think might resonate with readers. For November, I thought you might like this one:

“Food is better in November than any other time of the year.” – CYNTHIA RYLANT

It made me think of the holiday dinners of my childhood and all the ones since. Thanksgiving dinners at Pappaw and Mammaw Henry’s house were epic: ham, turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, creamed corn, stuffed celery, deviled eggs, a relish platter and lots of freshly baked biscuits. We had dressing, not stuffing, and our chunky cranberry sauce didn’t slide out of a can. We concluded with pumpkin pie, pecan pie and pineapple upside down cake. It was exactly the same meal, using exactly the same methods- prepared by memory not from recipes--every year. It was nothing fancy, and no one ever complained.

If you want complaints, just try introducing something new. I learned that the year I served cranberry salsa to the consternation of the traditionalists at the table.

As much as I enjoy trying new things, I have to admit there’s comfort in the old favorites that bring back memories and make the foods in November taste so good.
